The Horsley Rocks community choir began initially as a pop-up project. We put the feelers out and scheduled a first rehearsal session but had absolutely no idea what to expect, or indeed if we'd even get any takers. On that first evening over 100 people came through the door; we were completely blown away.

Now in 2020 we are still 80+ strong, with new members signing up on a weekly basis. We like to think we have created a warm, friendly and supportive environment for everybody. The song choices are varied enough to cater for all tastes and the arrangements are challenging enough to keep people driven but not too much that it feels like hard work. First and foremost the choir has to be an enjoyable pastime, but we also want everyone to feel a real sense of pride at what we've achieved each term.

The health benefits of singing are well documented.

Singing has been proven to have a significant positive impact on both our physical and mental wellbeing, improving and developing good posture and breathing technique, reducing muscle tension, anxiety and stress, and helping to improve our mood and overall sense of happiness. It is cognitively stimulating and can aid memory function, and in the case of group singing, is a wonderful way to develop and increase our social connections, which also play a vital role in maintaining good health.

I take a holistic approach to singing. Our body is our instrument. We use it in it's entirety when we sing, and in return our bodies reap so many benefits when we open our mouths to make music.
